- תָּרִיסm. (= תאריס, v. אָרַס a. denom.; cmp. תָּגָא a. תָּאגָא) 1) shield (of twisted osiers ). Sabb.VI, 4. Kel. XXIV, 1 שלשה תריסין הן ת׳ כפוףוכ׳ there are three sorts of shields (with regard to levitical cleanness): the bent shield (which may be used as an improvised seat) is unclean as midras (v. מִדְרָס), and that with which they play in the camp , v. דִּיצָה. Midr. Till. to Ps. 1; Yalk. ib. 833 (ref. to מגן, Ps. 84:12) (read:) הת׳ שמקיףוכ׳ (איסקוטא פרסאה, איש׳, being a gloss, v. טַארְגָא) that is the taris, which protects man on three sides, contrad. to צִנָּה. Ab. IV, 11 תשובה … כת׳ בפני הפורענות repentance and good deeds are as a shield against misfortune; (oth. opin: as a shutter, v. infra).Pl. תָּרִיסִין. Kel. l. c. Ber.27b; Bekh.36a בעלי ת׳ shield-bearers, i. e. great debaters. 2) (cmp. נַעַל) shutter.Pl. as ab. Bets.I, 5 אין מסלקין את הת׳וכ׳ you must not remove (take apart) shutters on the Holy Day; expl. ib. 11b תְּרֵיסֵי חנויות shutters of shops. Y. ib. I, 60c, v. לָחַם I; Y.Sabb.XII, 13c התירצין (read: התְּרִיצִין).
